In what seems to be the first instance of enforcing environmentally friendly marriages, Kerala Government is now contemplating to introduce ‘Green Protocol’ for marriages held in the State. The State Government of Kerala has decided it to experiment this in 4 cities. The new rule forbids the use of plastic, use and throw bottles, plates, and thermocol. Such items shall not be part of the wedding celebration says the new rule in Kerala.
Instead of using plastics, the use of Glass and environmentally friendly accessories for marriage. Suchitwa mission, the state nodal agency for sanitation, has launched this initiative in Kannur, Ernakulam, Kollam and Alappuzha on a pilot basis.
This new initiative was launched as part of the government’s anti plastic drive and Green Kerala Mission.
Features of Green Protocol
The use of Plastic and other non-degradable articles including disposable glasses, plates and thermocol decorations at marriage functions shall be strictly prohibited. The Nodal agency shall periodically check Marriage Choultries, Halls, Hotels and places wherever marriages take place. Violation of the protocol will invite penalty on the spot.
Special squads, comprising officials of Suchitwa Mission and revenue department staff have been formed to carry out inspections. The officials will videograph the marriages and action would be taken if the organizers flout the law, based on the nature of utensils and articles used there.
The Mission has joined hands with socio-cultural and religious outfits, district administration and panchayat outfits for the green protocol initiative.
